DAVID'S MEN GROW
Today is Thursday. I enjoyed preaching Chapel twice yesterday to our students. Elementary and High School. Then last night we had a great time. I taught on the names of God and spoke of Jehovah-Shalom (Jehovah is Peace). Today, I am going to give you the information that I used. Of course, I talked about it much, much more, but here it is:
Jehovah-Shalom = Jehovah is Peace
Judges 6:24 "Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom;"
THE BACKGROUND
It had been over 200 years since Jehovah had revealed Himself as Jehovah- M'Kaddesh (Jehovah who santifies). Since then Joshua has died, and another generation arose which knew not the LORD. They have strayed and forgotten Jehovah-jireh (Jehovah will provide); and Jehovah-rophe (Jehovah who heals) who would heal their hurts and sorrows; and turned their back on Jehovah-nissi (Jehovah our banner) who would fight for them; and forgotten Jehovah-M'Kaddesh who would have them be sanctified like God is sanctified. They have forsaken God and because of that, they have no peace!
Know GOD, Know Peace; No GOD, no peace!
Gideon is hiding and Israel lives in caves when God reveals Himself to Gideon. The angel says : "Peace be unto thee." Gideon has only known fear and poverty, but since God has revealed Himself to him, he builds an altar and names it: Jehovah-shalom. Jehovah is Peace!
THE MEANING OF THE WORD shalom
Translated: whole; finished; full; make good; welfare; well; pay; render; perform; requite; recompense; perfect; , but most often as peace (170 times).
The various shades of meaning contained in this word all indicate that every blessing, temporal and spiritual, is included in restoring man to that peace with God which was lost by the fall.
JEHOVAH the source of Peace:
The Messiah was "the Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6)
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." Jeremiah 29:11
"For thus saith the LORD, behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,..." Isaiah 66:12
The LORD God is showing Gideon, that He alone is the source of Peace and only as Israel separated themselves to live for God will they ever come to know Peace in the land, or in their hearts. That is still true for us today!
JESUS is our Peace:
John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you:"
Romans 5:1 "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Ephesians 2:14 "For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;"
PEACE comes because Jesus Christ paid our sin debt and reconciled us to the Holy Father. Now we are whole, we have been made good, we are in balance and our debt has been paid!
