Touring Through the Minor Prophets
I've had my two cups of coffee so far and I've been reading Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, and chapter two in Zechariah. Now, that is more than twenty chapters, it is forty chapters. February has fewer days, and to read all of the Bible in two months, I needed to get one day ahead. I've found that if I need to get ahead a day or two or get caught up a day or two, that Psalms and the Minor Prophets are the place to do it. These chapters are shorter and the verses are not as long. Hosea 8:7 says: "For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind:" The Bible not only tells us we reap what we sow, but we reap more than we sow. That applies to the sin we refuse to deal with; it will come back to bite us.
Hosea 10:12 says: "Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy;" Here again we reap more than we so and I'm grateful for this truth because we need God's mercy. Joel is a short book, but full of good truths. I can not mention them all, but in chapter 2:32, we read: "
that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delievered:" Sounds familiar doesn't it. Even in the Old Testament the seeds of Salvation by Faith are sowed throughout. Amos has many different repetitive phrases throughout that would be worth a good Bible study. In chapter 7, God gets out His plumbline to check out Israel. A plumbline tells us whether or not something is plumb (straight up and down). I hope as God checks my heart today I'm found that way, even though I rejoice that I'm saved by God's grace!! Obadiah is one chapter long and is about God's judgment on Edom. Jonah, of course is well known, and full of truths from chapter one to chapter four. In Jonah's life, God prepared a "great fish", a "gourd", a "worm", and a "vehement east wind". Each one of these had lessons for Jonah to learn. God has prepared many things in our lives to teach us as well. Well, if I even write a little about each book I'm in for a long message. These are just a few of the things I've gleaned today as I've read God's Word. Join in tomorrow for another Cup of Coffee with Pastor as I share with you some things I read in God's Holy Word. May God bless!! Pastor Mike Mutchler
