A FATHER SPEAKS TO HIS SON-- PROVERBS

The book of Proverbs, is Solomon speaking to his son, Rehoboam.  Twenty four verses carry the phrase "my son".  It is the hope and desire of Solomon that his son will choose to follow the paths of wisdom.  No one can deny that Proverbs is full of wisdom.  But children are not raised by our wise instruction, they are raised by our simple examples.  In Prov. 23:26, Solomon says:  "My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways".  The next verse says:  "For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit."  You see, Solomon wanted his son to have wisdom, but no one had a worse example of purity than Solomon with 300 wives and 700 concubines!!  His example, not his instruction is what was followed and that proves true over and over in Christian homes.  Full of wisdom, and Full of folly.  Solomon was both.  No wonder the Songs of Solomon is about the vanity of life.  If we live our lives for folly, then all life is, is vanity!!

Now, taking his son out of the picture, Proverbs is full of truths we need to live.  Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, lean not to thine own understanding and He shall direct thy paths.  This is the height of wisdom.  Proverbs personifies wisdom and gives it characteristics.  Wisdom says in 8:17-"I love them that love me, and those that seek me early shall find me."

So we see that he views wisdom with the qualities of a person.  He warns about the wicked woman.  Solomon knew something about this, they had pulled his heart away from God.  He warned in strong words, but a weak example.  If we are to be pure, we must guard ourselves from ever being drawn to anyone who is not our wife or husband.  Keeping pure in mind will help you keep pure in body.  Avoid places of temptation and you will not visit the house of destruction!
